Sunday January 20–Gar Day at Stubbies

Posted: January 20th, 2013

Dear Friends and Guests of Stubbies & Steins,

Many of you may know that our beloved dad passed away suddenly and peacefully Tuesday January 15. In the days since then there has been an enormous amount of love and blessings sent our way… we are so incredibly fortunate to be surrounded by you in this wonderful community.  Thank you.

In tribute and remembrance of Gar Hoflund, we are dedicating Sunday January 20th at the pub as Gar Day.  We open for all guests and friends of Gar to join this celebration from 4pm until Close.  We will be showing photos of Gar throughout the evening and offering Gar’s most favorite beers on special for the night.

We hope you will join us to share stories, smiles, and lots of laughs as we remember the good times and raise a pint in Gar’s honor.

Thank you for all your support and encouragement during this difficult time.

I was very sorry to hear that Gar had passed. I will miss him and his good energy, his mischievous smile, and his generous spirit. I was very honored that Gar and Berkeley wanted to help FOG with our recent Wine & Beer Tasting fund raiser. Thank you, Gar, for everything!

Our condolences go out to the family and friends of Gar. We did not know him for a long time, but the times we did spend with him were always filled with laughs and smiles. We will cherish those memories.

Berkeley and Bryce,
I was so sorry to hear about your dad’s passing. My thoughts are with you. Sorry I can not be there with you today, but I am having my own health issues. My thoughts will be with you.

He will be sorely missed. I enjoyed talking with him at Stubbies and elsewhere, learning about his fascinating projects, and future plans. Through his research and teaching he has left us with much benefit in the physical sciences for a sustainable society. My thoughts are with the family.
Thank you Gar!

Longtime friend of Gar. I knew him since the seventies from College of Engineering. So sorry for your loss. He was a wonderful caring friend and colleague.

Dear Berkeley and Bryce,

my warmest condolences.
I just found out last weekend what has happend in January by contacting Wayne Cheng, whom I found on Linked In by searching for Gar. I had tried to get in touch with Gar over the last 6 month but I failed in using the UFL email address. Last contact we had few years ago when we were living in Berlin and you were travelling to Munich in searching for nice food inspirations for your Restaurant and we could not make it to meet, which I regret so much now. Gar and I met first in Germany at GSI in Darmstadt during my PHD studies about 20 years ago…when I had long blond hair too…I learned so much from him, not only science, life too. He put me in a scuby diving class and we had great dives together in springs near by, Palm Beach, the Keys and Cozumel. He teached me heavy metal and later we went to a “Chrismas Metal” concert in Darmstadt standing first row in front of the band “Motorhead”.He enjoyed that so much. Lots of fine food and red wine during my visits stang at the house at the duck pond. One time we spend Christmas in Florida together, (you remember Berkely?) When I lived in Japan I found my wife Yoshika (my long hair went shorter…) and when she was pregnant with our first son Leon, we visited Florida in the year 2000 again and stayed with Gar for a view days. We lived then in Switzerland and your father came from a conference in Italy visiting us. He also spend once a nice weekend in Miltenberg at my parents house enjoying the local “Faust” bier. The job took me and my family later to Taiwan, then back to Switzerland, Germany,Berlin. Unfortunately, there was not the chance to meet again due to business and the little boys Leon and Jan, but we kept email contact. Last year I got a chance to startup a subsidiary in Taiwan and we moved again. I informed Gar but I could not get in touch with him…I am so sad about that. I always have a few pictures of my best friends with me and one picture is of your father during a dive trip. I miss him now very much with all these nice memories and moments of live we shared. I will keep his picture with me also in the future in my desk at work and when I travel. I hope I can see you when I will go to Florida with my family. Please say hello to Lynn from me.
All the best.
